Honda 5.5HP Pressure Washer with cheepo pump.

Has done the job I purchased it for, for the last 8 or 9 years but last fall it stopped pumping. (Motors always been a pig on fuel but it always started).

I'm in desperate need of my ol' trusty washer so I dug into the pump thinking the cheapo pump was the problem. All the ports were clean, all the valves were good, all the seals looked decent so I greased er up, fresh oil and hooked er back to the motor & the hose but still no pressure. :confused3:

Pulled the pump off the motor (in a different spot) and found the 'woodruff key' ground down to the keyway and the crank broken

Crankshaft.

Whats left of the key!

Is the quick solution to this to JB weld the crankshaft back into original shape and reset the key.
I set the original Key against the flywheel magnet and it is ferrous. I would have thought they'd put an aluminum Key in there, more sacrificial and less damaging.

So wheres a good place to get a replacement Key?

I can turn the 'washer pump' with my fingers, so why would the crankshaft keyhole sheer off like that?

Regards,
Zed.

My slight investigation on the NET is to JB weld the crankshaft back into original condition and reset the key.
What is left of the original 'Key' was set against the magnito magnet and it is ferrous so where do I get a replacement 'Key"?

The last time I had this problem, I ended up welding and machining the crank. I once also, by a customer's request, welded a woodruff key in the worn keyway

New Info;

Looking at the pump side of this mess I found this. You guys think this pump is salvageable?
Could I guess that even if I welded the key to the crank the the pump would explode under normal use?

There is a smaller key-hole on the opposite side of the broken pump & also on the Honda crank (1/2 moon on the crank). What are the chances the smaller key would hold up? I don't know if this piece is pressed in.

If you used the other side of the pump shaft, wouldn't that make the pump rotate in the wrong direction? Some pumps are bi-directional and some are not.

No, the pump would still be oriented on the crankshaft the same, just key'd in a different key-hole.
If the original key & hole were stripped with light use, I can't imagine a smaller key & hole lasting fer shat.

BUT

I would love to hear from a more mechanically inclined person then the slight knowledge I drag around. :ashamed:

If you try to use the good but smaller keyway to mesh with the larger keyway, I wouldn't trust it. You "might" be able to have one made. I remember the old Tecumseh flywheel to crankshaft keys were a large keyway on the flywheel, with a smaller keyway on the crank. It was a special key designed to shear in the event you hit something.

There is a smaller keyway in both the motor crank & the pump. Or, there is a larger (broken on both) and smaller keyway on both the motor & the pump.

My thought is; if the larger keyway broke just using this pressure washer now & then in my backyard, how is the smaller key & way possibly going to last?

I'd love to do this as I don't have the extra cash to get a new one but..

Someone with some knowledge/experience in these matters have a recommendation.
