Wild onions

My yard is currently covered in wild onions. Is there something I need to do about this or will they go away once the grass starts greening up and growing? (I am a lawn newbie!)

This are tough to get rid of...
Round up carefully wicked on, will be your best bet... BUT it is a bit time consuming.. be careful so as not to kill off your lawn grass... :smile:KennyV

My yard is 4 1/2 acres and there are maybe a dozen of those wild onion plants sprouting, they are not that much of a problem compared to other weeds so I just mow them over.

Here in the mid-south, wild onions are common. I used to live near public land, and they were quite prolific. The grass was mowed regularly, but the onions remained present throughout the mild times of the year.

Our four cats go near the onions but I have never seen them even approach or sniff the plants, which is good, because onions are deadly poisonous to cats. I have wondered sometimes if I should use herbicide to kill the wild onions for that reason.

Well I guess I'll just be mowing them down because I don't want to kill my grass! It just amazes me how very very many patches of onions there are in the yard.

if you want to get rid of the wild onions and not harm your grass go to your local southern states or feed store get you a bottle of 2-4d spray the onions and there done no harm to grass if you do a soil test you will find you need lime on your lawn.
