Which mower should I keep?

I have two push mowers and need to get rid of one (don't have a use for more that one). Both are in about the same condition as far as the deck, handle, wheels. Both have very little use and the same amount of use (2 seasons). So, it really boils down to the engine. Both have Briggs engines. I've done a lot of searching but can't determine which engine might be more durable.

Mower 1: 1996 Murray 22" with the 4.5 HP Quantum XTE engine, model number: 127802

Mower 2: 2008 MTD 21" with 158 cc 5.5 ft lbs torque, model number: 10T802

Which do you think has the better engine? Parts cost one vs the other?

Thanks for any help!

It sounds to me like you should pick the one that you like the color of best. Other then that I would pick the newer one, because after so much time manufactures will stop making replace parts.

Briggs and Stratton does a good job of keeping parts available even if the engine is 40+ years old. Plus, both of those engines were common designs, so parts will be available for either engine for a long time.

In my opinion, the "2008 MTD 21" with 158 cc 5.5 ft lbs torque" is probably the better of the two. Those engines are tough, simple and reliable - and when they do break they are very easy to fix.

Yes I do agree with you on the engine parts but not with the Murray part. I am getting old mowers in my shop that they just don't make parts for anymore. Also don't forget his older mower is already 20 years old.

The Murray brand was acquired by Briggs & Stratton in 2004. On August 30, 2005, Lawrenceburg produced its last lawnmower, closing on September 30,

If you are having trouble finding parts, post some of the part numbers and I will look them up. I have run across very few mowers whose parts are no longer available.

Funny! The Murray is shiny red and the MTD is green. I like the red best but I did put a big flame sticker across the front of the MTD mower. Thanks for the input guys.
