I just purchased a new place and it is 2/3rds and acre. I am looking at getting a 42 inch riding mower with hydrostatic drive, peddle control, bagger out door for around 2000 dollars. I went to Lowes and they have a last year model JD LA110 for around 1500, with bagger and all it was 2100. I am also looking at a craftsman yt 4000. I was told by my father in law to steer clear of JDs from Lowes. I would also like to see online options, i seen mowers direct has free shipping, was thinking about some of the husquarnas, which doesnt AYP make husq and craftman? I dont know about mowersdirect option becuase the details are sketchy the husq i was looking at I dont know if it is peddle control.

not too worried about service I fairly mechanically incline and have been piecing together mowers for years. I think what some people trashing on the box store models is they assume its as good as a $3000 JD, its not going to be, its going to be on par with your mid grade mowers from AYP . the Lowes told me the local jd dealer services them. I will check out the dealer and see if i can get a better deal. I wont be bush hogging or trying to plow fields with this.
What you are saying is right... The JD dealer or any mower shop will do any shop work you might need... Besides, as you said, you will most likely be doing your own service work...
any Mower you get from Lowes Home Depot or any place that happens to sell the SAME model, IS going to be the same.
There are some folks that have even convinced themselves that motor oil sold in WalMart is somehow going to be a different formulation than the same brand oil they buy somewhere else, (but pay MORE)...

I just talked to JD dealer, he says he has to sale it at the same price, he didnt seem to steer me into buying a more expensive model, they have one advantage is the delievery is only 25 dollars vs 59 dollars, which is funny since the dealer is probably 25miles away and lowes is only 2. Plus i get test it out. Going tomorrow to talk with them
If I was buying an entry level mower I would consider the new D 100 series from Deere with the 5 speed gear tranny. I have had the L130 with the K46 Tuff Torq tranny and it has a short life, this problem is fairly well documented on TBN. The X320 series and up seem to hold up much better and my current X749 has a great tranny. For 2//3's of an acre I would think the gear tranny would be the best bang for the buck at about $1499.
