My first mower that was actually mine was a 1980 (I think) snapper 19" with the 3hp Briggs. It was about 5 years old when my dad got it for me and, even though it was just a non-sp 19", I loved it because it was my first snapper. Would be neat to still have that.

My first rider was an early 80s Montgomery wards 38" deck with a 12hp Tecumseh. I was with my dad when he bought it new...ok so it really didn't start out as mine all mine but when he sold the house he was using it on it wound up at our home and I used to drive it around the back yard. It was damn fun. Gave it to my father in law about 10 years ago and a couple years later he bought a new one and we gave the old one away. What a dummy I was. All it needed was a starter. I've learned my lesson to not sell stuff I really don't want to sell just for the sake of selling it. When I'm gone my kids can go through all the stuff in the garage and sell or keep what they want...I'll spend the rest of my days collecting it!!!

Prob about 1990 my mom took me to our small local True Value hardware store and bought the least expensive new mower the had. It was a Lawn Chief push mower. Don't know what engine or size. Never changed oil, plug or air filter. Just added oil when it needed it. Used it to cut mom's yard for over 10 years. The wheels finally rotted off the deck. I moved out and she got a mowing service.

My first rider was a 1982 John Deere stx38 that my dad's girlfriend gave me when they were moving. I hated it for the two years I used it. Never really ran good for me. I didn't know much about mowers or engines then. Gave it to a co-worker who fixed it up and mowed with it for prob 4 years and passed it on to his dad who still uses it weekly.

My first mower was a 1961 Bolens 800, 38" triple blade mower that was cast iron from the front axel to the rear axel and nearly everything in between. The most amazing thing of the mower was a 7 HP Wisconsin engine that could pull that 38" deck and very heavy tractor better than the 20+ over/rated HP units they put out today. (hard to beat the old Wisconsin HP) She even has a great working snow blower plus the tractor has a locking rear axel.

Now the impressive part I still have the mower (a few sets of rings latter) and it is nearly as solid as it was in 1961. I know that the new mowers turn shorter, ride nicer, do a better smoother job mowing but you have to give it to those design engineeres of that day they really built a mower for a lifetime.

An early 60s Wards pushmower with 2 3/4hp. My father had gotten it brand new, but had since replaced it with a newer Wards rear-bagger with 3 1/2. (1972 or so) He still had the old Wards and so offered it to me for free when I bought my house in 1981. I used it until he then moved up to a self-propelled job. I then took the old rear-bagger and put the ancient Wards out to the curb. Started it up for the guy that took it. Those old Wards machines lasted literally for decades, I did notice though, the rear-bagger would leave clumps as the bag started getting full. The MTD I finally replaced that with in 1996 had no such problem. I would literally have to keep checking the bag, as it would stuff the crap out of it making it difficult to get it back out. Just got a rider this year. It's only my fourth lawnmower and I've been married 38 years.
