Unless you only mow between the hours of 11am to 1 pm you will find a sombreo works a lot better than any fixed sun shade.
By law the civic authorities down here must provide sun protection and for a while lots of very expensive sun shade were fitted but eventually they all went down the broad brimmed hat and light vented garden glove routes.
Even on the ZTR with ROP's to fit them to most sun shades dissappear very quickly as to be effective they need to be 2' to 4' in front & behind the driver and a similar length left right.
Next time you are near ( on on ) a golf course look at the sun shades on them and how little sun protection they offer the golfers and the golfers are not going back & forth and around in circles quickly ( unless I am one of the golfers ).

Thanks for the idea, it is appreciated, but usually a good portion of my mowing normally might be somewhere between about 11am and 3pm :smile:

The umbrella I plan on using is a good size (68 inches wide) and offers UV protection also.

Maybe you can use a bracket like is used to attach a TV antenna pole to the side of a house to hold the upper end of the PVC pipe and you can attach the bottom end to the hitch hole at the rear of the mower.

Thanks for the idea, it is appreciated, but I already got the parts I need, just haven't had the time yet to put it together (was busy building the shed for the mower) I'm using different sizes of PVC, larger to hold the umbrella and smaller as bracing. I'll see about posting some photos after I get it finished. (I was planning to use the hitch hole for the bottom support though)

I have seen some very interesting things made from PCV pipe. I did not know how much you can shape it with a bit of heat.

Yep, there are even web sites specializing in PVC project ideas. I made a PVC frame (half circle arc, but large enough it bent okay without any heat) over about a 10x20 foot garden area that I can stand up inside and also cover with plastic when I want to extend the growing season. During the summer months it keeps the deer out as I have chicken wire high enough up the sides.

The PVC project for holding an umbrella over the lawn tractor seat does not involve heating any of the PVC though. It will be easier to explain how I did it when you can see the photos of the finished project when it is done. (hopefully within a few days as time allows)

Neat !

We very very rarely see a male buck, they must stay back hidden in the woods nearby, but on any given day we might see anywhere from 2 to 5 and occasionally sometimes even up to as many as 10+ of the female does walking thru our yard.

That's the biggest buck I have seen in my yard. Had a couple of does on the back deck eating vines and the bushes there. We have does and young bucks in the yard each night. Not bad for a subdivision.

Not quite 100% done yet, but here are a few photos for now, later after I finish it and have the umbrella in it I'll take a few more pictures of the completed project with the umbrella in it and then start a separate thread for for it for those who might want to try similar ideas.

I have another section of PVC that extends it higher, but it is too high to put on and get out of the shed doorway, either Friday or more likely Saturday I'll take the tractor out of the shed, add the extension piece on, then I need to determine where to put a screw or bolt thru for the bottom of the umbrella handle to rest upon.

The PVC pieces fit together so tightly I did not have to use any glue at all. (which is good as some parts needed to stay unglued, such as the end cap on the hitch and the extension pipe the umbrella goes in).

I should be able to use the same bolt going thru the hitch to attach a dump cart when I need to.

I thought I might have needed to use bungee cords for added support, but it is firmly stable and doesn't move. I use an end cap on the top when not in use to keep any dirt or bugs out of the pipe. (the short extension tube in the one photo is just to attach the top end cap to when not in use, the extension tube for the umbrella is much longer)

Also, it does not interfere with being able to lift the seat up.

I can always paint it later to make it look better if I decide to.
