Hi from Canada,
I was gifted a trimmer from a neighbour FS38 and the primer bulb wouldn’t fill.
I took out the carb and everything was gunked up so I want to get a new carb, filter and plug. The carb I removed is a C1Q-S95 but I think it is not the original as I called Stihl and tried to provide a serial number that was partially missing .
The representative said I should try C1Q S186.
My question is. Where can I find the engine mode number so I can properly match the correct carburetor to the trimmer?
Is there a location on the trimmer / engine where the number is located?
There is no stamped 9 - digit number on the belly of my unit

If your trouble is that the throttle cable end doesn't fit in the new carb, they did a change a few years back, they switched to a cable with a "z" bend.
I suspect that is the original carb. Found a chart that showed the FS38 with both the C1Q-S95or the S97 carbs. I am sure that number has superceded to a new carb. I have always provided the model number of the trimmer and the number off of the carb and we go from there. I have seen my local dealer pull out of separate book that list the carb number changes,
Thanks, that is helpful.
I think I will go with the C1Q- S97 carburetor. The diaphragm, primer bulb and fuel filter need be replaced so I will get the entire kit and install

Does your throttle cable have a z-bend like this one?
Other than this issue, any carb will work fine. The different throttle cables are the only issue that may give you trouble.
Here is the list price around here from the Stihl dealer, just get it there. They should have it on the shelf.
Take along your old one to make sure....

I solved the problem by just selling the throttle cable with the carb..........
