Vintage Tecumseh 12hp

Hi, I have a 12hp Tecumseh horizontal engine, manufactured in the late '60's. Model 143.582012. Serial # 8152 HH120 (I think). Cast Iron solid state ignition.
It is mounted on a homemade tractor my father built in the late '60's. Hasn't been used for 10-15 years but has been kept in the garage.
I would like to get it going again. After sitting all those years, amazingly it started but for only a few minutes and died. I bought a new carb, spark plug. Couldn't get it started.
Pulled the spark plug out , checked for spark but had none. I'm suspecting it is the ignition transformer. Cost, if I could even find one is $200-300.
Any alternative aftermarket sources?

Locate the ignition kill wire and disconnect it to see if the spark comes back. This old bird may also have and ignition breaker set under the flywheel. Ignition point could have also glazed over from years if sitting. Simply cleaning them with some 600-grit sandpaper may work.

It's been quite a number of year (40+) since I worked on one of these, but I think I still have a manual I can reference.

Teryl Fixes All on You Tube often gets some of the old stuff like this and is a great source for small engine repair information.
 
did you check the oil first? How old was the fuel? Did dad install a fuel shutoff that you forgot to turn on so it ran until the carb emptied?
 
Checked the oil, drained the gas tank and added fresh fuel.
There is a fuel shut off but it was fully open. checked gas flow through line.
Installed new carb.
