Do as slomo indicates by adding choke little bit at a time

AND

Also hold the governor arm steady or hold the carb throttle butterfly steady manually so as the governor is not involved and see if the carb is rough and if so see if it's rough at both idle, middle and higher rpms.

Is that the old style Tecumseh carb that has both low rpm and High rpm adjustable jets or the newer non adjustable jet type?
I've wrestled with them surging and hunting Tecumseh's and can usually stabilize them. I finally got to where Tecumseh engines and I became friends, but not so at the beginning when we were strangers.

Give us a report back?
it's the adjustable type...will check governor, but when it surges it seems to puff a wisp of black smoke

Apply the choke slowly. See if she smooths out near full choke.

Would do a full fuel delivery clean/refresh. Super clean the tank. New fuel line all the way to the carb. Make sure you have a solid flow AT the carb inlet. Drain the fuel into a glass jar looking for water or trash. Bet you have water in the gas.

Do you have an old open top fuel can spout? Letting water, humidity, leaves, bugs, dirt dobbers, grass, did I say water? Can sit outside in the weather?

Maybe a new style semi-sealed spout with O-rings, pain in the butt style to fill with? Hope it's this one.

Look in the bottom of your fuel can. Get some good light and readers on. Bet it's loaded with trash. If so, every fill up you pass trash to this carb in question.

Dirty fuel cans are massively overlooked.
cans are 2 yr old plastic. sealed,,,and they sit inside garage yr round. and as i said, same problem after ultra sonic cleaning and re assembly

Most people pressure test the needle/seat. Would hope it held with vacuum. Pressure test at 7psi for 30+ minutes for a successful confirmation.

Also when doing this test, needle needs to be wet. As in spray some PB mega spray on it then test.
yes will re test with pressure after i remove carb...for the 3rd time:LOL::rolleyes:

just looking for a few opinions, i have an ultra sonic cleaner i bought from Harbor freight... ( dont laugh please) it works pretty well i think, sometimes after 2 cleanings for stubborn dirt. i bought the solvent from harbor freight... what kind of cleaners do ya all use ?? im thinking of trying Dawn dish detergent.
I put the solvent in a sealed jar (glass or plastic) along with the small parts and fill the UC with hot water. That allows a range of solvents ( cleaners, gasoline, acid and such) to be used in small quantities that can be disposed of easily. This works well as the ultrasonic bubbles are transferred through the jar to the parts inside.

I like Dawn, it cleans well. For other stuff, like firearms, I sometimes use the ultrasonic cleaners from Brownells. Amazonski also carries cleaners. There are some specifically for aluminum stuff which can be harmed by some ultrasonic cleaners.
