Troy Bilt Self Propelled Lawn Mower Issue

Hi, I have a Troy-Bilt Walk Behind Lawn mower that is self-propelled, front wheel drive. Recently the right front wheel doens't seem to be self-propelling. If I lift the front end up it will spin but when it's on the ground doesn't. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Thanks

Two things will cause this problem. First would be a worn drive belt. If it is three plus years old, time to replace. Second would be a a worn drive gear on the right drive wheel. Again it may be time to replace.

The belt is in good shape. The left wheel propels great. I took off the spur gear yesterday and it looks okay. I'll post a picture later to get your opinion. Thank you for replying.

Then it probably the bearing assembly binding up on the axle.

Is this the part you are referring to? Thanks

Attached are a picture of the Spur Gears from my Lawn Mower. I also included a picture of a new spur gear. I think the gears from my mower look fine. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.

The used gear on the left is definitely worn. Check the axle for play, it should not move up/down or side to side. If it does, it may be the bearing Star posted and you have pictured.

Thank you. I will look into it.

In regards to the drive shaft bearing, if it is worn, is that the reason the front right wheel isn't turning when the self-propelled lever is depressed? Thanks

A worn bearing will allow the axle to move, not allowing the gears to mesh properly.

I had a Troy front propelled mower with the same problem. The wheel drive shaft is held by bronze bearings that wear out and allow the drive shaft to move and not engage with the wheel gear teeth. Raise the front off the ground and if you can wiggle the wheel up, down front or back at all the shaft bearing is worn out. I have since converted my Troy to a push mower.

Is the shaft bearing you are referring to the picture I posted on this thread earlier? (reply #5 on page 1)

My bearings were bronze that mounted into the actual deck. They were severe egg shaped and to replace the entire shaft wouldn’t be cost effective. I removed all the drive stuff and now it’s a push mower. good luck.

TroyBilt part number is 641-00014 when I look up your unit. To me it looks just like the one posted.

Thanks. Part isn't expensive. I am going to order two of those plus the two spur gears. Total cost around $30. If it doesn't work I will convert it to a push mower.

I replaced both bearings and the spur gears and it seems to have improved the performance. I have only used the mower once so time will tell. Thanks
