I have replaced the main drive belt. It seems to have too much slack and will engage but not enough for sufficient power?
when and where will my answer show up?

When some one answers it :confused2:

Usually this will be because it has been routed incorrectly around the clutch pulleys.
If the mower has done big hours then pulleys could be worn enough to require an undersized belt.
Both of these assume that you have fitted the correct belt so where did you buy it from & what number was it ?

You have a two belt system with an upper and lower belt. My bet is that the variable speed pulley is not moving freely, which will mean no speed change. Going to have to remove both belts and make sure the pulley moves up/down freely. Then carefully reinstall belts making sure the pulley and belts do not get pinched.

If the sliding sheeve is stuck generally it will drive quite well in the higher drive ratios.
However essential is to use original equipment belts.
No aftermarket one will do the job as the MTD set up used a wider than standard and shallower than standard belt.
Down here they are $ 96 & $ 145 respectively.
Believe you me I have tried every possible alternative including lapped lik belts but nothing will work properly other than the genuine MTD belt.
I buy them from the USA retail for 1/2 the wholesale price down here including shipping and pass 1/2 of that on to the customers which is why I can make a reasonable living repairing mowers .
