Trouble with Briggs Quantum Air Filter Gaskets

Is it just me or are others having a hard time getting these air filter gaskets to seal in order for the primer bulb to push the fuel. The one I've got right now is 123k02 0541-e1, but these gaskets are on many engines and I'm having problems with them.

I remember years ago they used to be made of flimsy rubber and were a real pain. When they started making them of regular gasket material I thought it was a great move. Not so sure now.

I've tried using 2, tried different methods of tightening the 3 screws that hold the air filter housing on, I've tried everything............ Is there a secret to this that I'm missing??

Normally the double gasket will fix it. there isn't any sealant of any kind on the gaskets, that could be blocking a passage is there. Maybe a primer bulb problem. Possible the bowl nut on carb clogged preventing fuel from getting push up.

Nope............ I can hold the air filter holder up, hold the gasket on, push the primer bulb with my hand and feel air coming out. I've pushed on the bottom of the AF holder to seal it better while attached to the carb and get a small amount of fuel coming out when I push the primer..................... I also took a small amount of air and ran thru the primer hole on the carb and get fuel coming up.................It's just not sealing well......... I checked and these gaskets were made by Rotary and not Briggs............. And this is not the first time this year that I've had this problem....... What do you think?? Thanks Ilengine

As stated above, the double gasket method usually does the trick. You definitely have the right gasket with the small hole on the right side as you place it on the air cleaner cover, correct? Maybe your cover is warped or disfigured and won't seal properly.

Yep, got the right gasket......... Going to try it again. I may be wrong but I think those air filter housings used to be a little thicker and more heavy duty. Not sure about that but I never had this problem years ago.

i have seen this 100 times sometimes the plastic will wear and it will not seal ..I have had to change the housing its self it will flatten out the top edge not allot but enough to stop it from sealing ...Also take compressed air and blow it threw the little holes in the front of the carb to make sure there clear that is part of your priming system also ...Good luck let us know hoe u make out

Hello , something else to try , check the condition of your carb bowl sealing ring ,if it has been damaged or cut , as far as i can see as you push the primer you pressurise the bowl which then pushes fuel up into the inlet . Gary:smile:

if i can find one of the old ones i have here that is worn out i will post a pic of a good plastic housing and a bad one ...they can be a pain in the back side

Well, I got it.......... Evidently I was tightening the screws too tight. I used some loc-tite on the screws, tightened them in until I could see fuel coming up when priming. It took very little tightening of the screws to make it prime. Learn something new every day..............

Loctite on the air cleaner screws was definitely not needed but hey, glad your mower is working good now Steve. Cheers:thumbsup:

It was actually blue medium permatex bolt holder................ I was told by a B&S Master Tech that Briggs uses loctite when they install the air filter holders, leading you to think that the screws were actually tightened quite snug. Said that's why the bolts are tight when you loosen them for the first time and why it takes very little tightening of the screws when re-installing them in order to get the gaskets to seal.... Over tighten and the seal breaks. Made sense to me and sounded good.

Do you disagree??

No, not at all. The factory usually has a really good, uh, grip:ashamed: on what their design needs. It's only that I've shot myself in the foot a couple of times using red rather than blue that I mentioned it at all...:smile:

Thanks... I wasn't aware of stay away from the red... In fact that's what I was going to buy at Autozone but all they had was the Permatex medium and heavy........ I looked for light duty but there was none so I went with medium............ Hoping that wasn't too heavy duty.
