Trans. drive belt twisting

Have a Troy bilt Horse 2010. The trans drive belt twists itself around, then comes off. All the pulleys & bearings look good, the belt seems OK. I have a new belt to use as a last resort. I tried to get the idler pulley off (the one on the bracket), & the whole shaft turns, same w/ the bracket. There's no way to get at the other end of the shaft to keep it from turning,w/o maybe having to take the body off, so I can weld the ends The engine is speeding up & slowing down on its own, hunting? Maybe a governor prob? Can't replace belt till I can get idler pulleys off.

You have to remove the seat, pedals, and fender assy to be able to get to the nut that holds the pulley on. Twisting is usually due to a worn spot on the belt allowing it to turn on one of the pulleys.

Thanks for the reply, ilengine. Is this such a poor design, you have to do all that just to replace the tranny drive belt?

While you are looking around the belt paths... insure that brackets are not bent, pulleys out of alignment, and anything supporting them, loose...
Some things are more serviceable than others... but no matter how easy or difficult belt replacement is ... you generally will get many years service from a good belt, if it's path is true & well supported... :smile:KennyV

This Troy built mower is the poorest designed, POS, machine you could get. The controls are difficult & inconvenient to use, the key is in the way of your knee when getting off, & on. All the pulleys are all good on the deck. I replaced the belt (that was'nt very old) w/ a new one, & it stays on now. The engine speeding up & down was because of a carb gasket leaking.
Many thanks, guys

I'm not sure if anyone has answered this, but I have had the same problems. I do know the other end of the bolt you are looking for, on mine is directly behind the gas tank under the hood. Hope this helps
