2010 toro bought used.have used it but now it won’t start. Motor turns and backfires regulaly- say every 10th revolution. Has new battery,spark plug, solenoid and coil. Now what.
Symptoms consistent with a brokens timing key in the flywheel or a loose inlet valve seat.
Remove the flywheet retainer and check that both halves of the ket way slot meet to make a perfect square

Well that adds another dimension to the problem.
Very easy to shear the key when tensioning the flywheel bolt / nut
If it is sheared ( easy fix ) relieve he edges of the key slots as when the key shear you often get a burr there that prevents the taper from sealing tight so you end up sheaing the key again and again & again.
