I just acquired a 21199 serial 4008… The guy I got it from said he was trying to fix the transmission. Problem being a loud screech when the transmission is engaged. He said he replaced the belts all 3 of them and it did not help. His take was that the transmission needed to be replaced and he didn’t feel up to the task. I started looking at it and it does schreech but it seems to me like it pulls a lot harder/faster on the left wheel, to the extent that the mower pulls strongly to the right.
Anybody ever see a problem like this? I suppose it could be an internal issue with gears in the gearbox. It does seem like the transmission belt is very tight but I did not have a lot of time to troubleshoot the problem. I will be spending some more time on it tomorrow. Any thoughts welcome and appreciated

Hello C.,

If you are tight of funds, only replace the obvious bad parts. Otherwise....

"Never seen anyone get half a haircut". (A phrase an old tech used when I was a just starting out many years ago)

I recommend any/all bearings that have been exposed and used the way these have been, should be replaced.

Good point Nobody replaces just the one shoe that the heel fell off of…you get a new pair

So I got into the Timemaster today. I found that the underside of the mower was quite caked with hardened grass clippings. I scraped and power washed it including the transmission and transmission output shaft. When I got done cleaning it I ran it and the screech was virtually eliminated. It does seem like it pulls a lot harder/faster than other Timemasters I have worked on. It pulls especially hard when I fully depress the bail.

I was told by the original owner that he had replaced all the belts and both the small and cogged transmission belts look brand new and aftermarket not OEM. I am wondering if the transmission belt is aftermarket and maybe a little shorter than it should be. I am wondering if the belt being a tighter fit might cause the transmission to run too fast??? The cable doesn’t seem to be adjusted too tight…there is some slack in the cable, but once I pull the bail 1/2 way down it takes off. I will take a close look at the transmission belt and see if there is any clear markings on ir. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on thus
