Toro 20016 drivetrain housing came loose and belt not tight

I replaced the belt on my Toro 2 years ago and it has been a dream lawn mower. Today I went to use it for the last time this season and it wasn't driving, when I tilted the mower onto the back big wheels the front would spin but when I put on all fours, it wouldn't drive. I looked under mower to see belt loose, and only to find that the wheel it sits around on the front side of the mower the entire assembly/unit/housing is just loose. I don't know where to tighten this. Can anyone help?

Looking at this parts diagram ... Parts and Diagrams for Toro Consumer 20016, 22in Recycler Lawnmower, 2005 (SN 250000001-250999999)
It appears that bracket #19 pivots the drive assembly to snug up the belt on the pulley... Is that not the case?
Look to see if anything is interfering with that movement... :smile:KennyV

Hi Kenny,
Thanks for the reply I put the machine away in November kind of frustrated, I took it out again today and bought a new belt hoping that the current belt was just warped but that wasn't the case, the entire housing keeps pivoting now and just has the belt loose on my machine, to the point where I can move it with my fingers. I see nothing whatsoever hindering any movement, if anything, something's missing to keep it braced/bracketed but that's impossible that a part would go missing out of nowhere. I am trying to decide if the entire transmission needs to be replaced and if that's the case I need to reassess whether or not to pay the $160 I was quoted to replace the transmission. But what's getting to me is that the transmission seems to just pivot on the bar/axle it sits on with no chance for tightening up and/or pulling the belt tighter?

Hello Joe..
The entire assembly should tip to tighten the belt...

If you turn the top pulley by hand (belt removed) ... will it turn the wheels. If it will, then the trans is ok.
If not it May be the keys at the ends of the axles, check items 14 & 15 on the above parts breakdown... :smile:KennyV

Good info from KennyV, alsocheck the play in the pulley (could be bad berring) also if you need the entire trans it is $42.00 on Ebay and you can do it yourself.

Just joined and saw this thread. Helpful to me, too. I have a similar problem and seems it may also stem from the keys, Parts 14 & 15, at the axle ends. Are these keys available separately, or must I buy the entire transmission?

WELCOME to LMF...
It is either a woodruff key or common square key stock... what ever it is, you will be able to pick it up at a hardware store or most auto parts places. :smile:KennyV
