Just tore the spark plug boot on my John Deere x500 riding mower (Kawasaki e13*97/68SN4G2 engine). Is there a way to just replace the rubber boot or do I need to go in and replace the whole wire?

A common replacement part.
Every mower shop will have boxes full of them
leave it in the sun for a couple of hours to warm up then liberal amounts of silicon spray.
Take a photo of your lead because there are several different boots for different cable ends.

Agreed, simple replacement. I use dish soap as the lubricant.

Important thing is it needs to be warmed up & pliable + lubed for easy slide, both off & on.

Don't forge the dielectric grease inside the boot before sliding the boot on. Makes it much easier to remove. Doesn't get stuck to the plug.

Yes & twist, before pulling. This gets it loose, then it should come off easy,.
