The type of flywheel puller will depend on the type and size of the engine you are working on. Briggs has three different size pullers, well actually four, but that last puller is for the briggs engine with the 1500 watt generator build into the flywheel/stator. Kohler had their own puller, but it looks like a steering wheel puller. I have used that puller for Kohler, Kawasaki, and a couple of other brands, could be used on briggs to I believe.

it all depends on the type of engine.

While I have 3 different B & S pullers and 2 Kohler ones I rarely use them as in most cases you have to tap the flywheel first as they are not threaded.
The pullers I use most often are my set of Crab Pullers.
They look like this pic 159.jpg
Naturally mine are out on loan, so this is a pic I pinched off the web ( thanks whoever owns it )
I have a similar set but the cross bar is parallel and split with the jaws going through it but it is nowhere near as good as these.
Always used in conjunction with the big 1400 ft lb impact driver

For small things like trimmers & chainsaws it is a Sykes Pickvant slide hammer another tool that never seems to make it back into the tool drawer as it has a set of collet pullers as well which are bees knees for oil seals.
