Features a Yard-Man 173cc, 19 inch, 3 in 1 (mulch, rear bag, or side discharge) REAR DRIVE self propelled push mower for $229.99.

I cannot recall the last time I saw a push mower advertised with a 19 inch deck, or featuring a rear drive for under $300.00. Not that I need another push mower, but will check it out next trip I make to their store.

Meijers is a Michigan based grocery and general merchandise store that has gradually expanded southward over the last 20 years, but I don't think any further than Kentucky.

Interesting because there is a store on the west coast called "Fred Meyers" I had assumed that your references to Meijers was the same, obviously not.
Oh congratulations for going 2 days without a post. Hope your vision is getting better.

Isn't it amazing how prices on some things get lower and lower and some things go higher and higher? Mower prices seem about the same now as they have been for a while. I guess it's good for buyers.

I remember paying about $250-$300 for 4 hp Craftsman 22 inch self-propelled walk behind mowers in the early 90's, so today's prices are about the same.

HOWEVER, they have really cheapened many of the components. Those 20 year old models came with a chrome-plated handle fitted with a cushion grip, a real choke, etc. and the wheel adjusters were multiple part, heavy duty assemblies that were built 3X better than today's adjusters. And the wheels were fitted with metal center hubs that lasted forever, while today's mowers use a plastic center hub. Comparing the front drive gearcases of a 1990 vs 2011 model would really give you an idea of how cheaply made many components of todays' push mowers are.

I agree. I just bought a high end Toro and after mowing the lawn three times, I'm still amazed when I lfit the front to turn and the front wheels spin for a few seconds. My last mower had the plastic wheels and so much friction they stopped instantly. It also had the one lever adjuster and it was always jarring loose and dropping the mower down. The Toro has one for each whell and they stay put.
