Hello, I have an older Troy Bilt tiller with a Tecumseh HH60 engine with an electric starter. I have been looking for a magneto with no luck and I'm wondering if any other model engines magneto would work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried eBay or Jack's small engine? Is it a solid-state model, or does it have ignition points?

It has points. I've tried both ebay and every online supplier but it appears to no long be available. I was hoping another model might work,

The full magneto 610689A is no longer available, but coil 30560A, points 30547A and condenser 30548 are all available. Before purchasing a parts please read the section of this manual so you understand what all must be done to replace a magneto on an older Tecumseh engine. Most people think it’s as easy as other engines, but unless you have the proper tools it’s not a plug and place repair. Second how do you know the magneto is bad? What tests have you done.

If I'm not mistaken an updated solid-state coil is supposed to fit this application and eliminate the need for the points. An OEM coil is no longer available. Tecumseh shut down around 2009.

I have done this on older Briggs and Stratton engines and they worked great.

The point trigger wire is eliminated (not connected anymore) but the ignition kill wire is still used so the ignition can be shut down.

I have found the parts I listed available on multiple websites. My experience with trying to upgrade Tecumseh engines with the CDI coils to be very very iffy and at the cost I stopped recommending this type of repair unless the customer is willing to shell out $100.00, in advance, with no guarantee.

Thanks for the info. This is more than I know before. I have replaced the coil, points and condenser but I was hoping to get a new magneto as well. I think there is a short in mine. I've heard that the hh60 is difficult to convert to solid state but after putting in all new parts I don't want to try it.

If you have replaced the points, condenser and the coil, you only have the laminated core to replace and you have rebuilt the entire magneto. We must be misunderstanding what we each mean by magneto. Please explain what you mean by “magneto” and how you tested it to determine it is bad.
Doc, do you know the converting tecumseh and briggs engines are totally different? One is easy and the other should be done by a tech over the age of 60. As i said, don’t ask me to do it and I’m over 75.

The tiller is electric start. The magneto (or alternator) is what charges the battery. It along with the coil is mounted to the stator plate. It has a diode in line to covert AC to DC power for the battery. Sorry, I should have explained this in my first post.

Ok, now I’ve got a better idea of what you are working on. I haven’t seen one of these setups in over 20 years. From what you are now saying I think you are looking for either a stator or stator coil needed to charge the battery, not the magneto which is used to produce spark forthe ignition system. Have a couple of questions. Can you supply us with the spec number for your engine so we can figure out exactly which charging system you have? Have you gone through the troubleshooting procedure in chapter 6 of the manual I posted? If you have please post the results of your findings, so we have an idea how to help you out. Unless you can better describe exactly what you are looking for it will be very hard for any of us to provide help. Please remember that this engine, with this setup, has not been produced in over 20 years and only the older tech on this site have ever seen one. Any pictures you can supply us will also be of a great help.
