Swapping engines Craftsman

Hey everyone, first post here. Just trying to fix my mowers!

I have a Troy-Bilt Model# 120895
and a
Craftsman Model# 917.27563

The transmission on the Troy-Bilt has gone and the engine one the Craftsman has gone.

I was wondering if it's possible to swap the Troy-Bilt engine into the Craftsman. I have no problem drilling holes to "make it fit"

The only modifications I have done really are disabling the reverse shut-off on my mowers. I have bought a used mower to use now but I would like to swap the engines and keep the Craftsman as a backup.

Can anyone offer some advice or questions I could answer?

Should not be a problem.
Just double check the diameter of the PTO shafts are the same.
If the engines are different brands then the engine plugs will be different so some creative rewiring might be required.
Electric PTO engines have higher output alternators than manual PTO's
If the engines are the same brand they will swap over.

Hey thanks for the reply. Well one is outside my garage the other is in my shed right now. I'll check it out tomorrow What should I look for? They look almost identical.
I'm new to this so if you could help me out like a "dummies" guide. to finding the PTO shafts.

That is why we are here, to learn from some and pass on knowledge to others.
PTO = Power Take Off.
which is the bit with the pulleys on it.
'You are going to remove them in any case so may as well do them now.
Should both be 1" diameter but easy way is to try the pulley from the mower you want to use on the engine you want to use.
Do not get them mixed up as the sizes and distance apart of the pulleys on the shaft might be different.

Both tractors are 18.5 HP. I've looked they should be the same size.

I'm trying to find the manual online for the Troy-Bilt so I can see how to take the engine out, but I feel like it'll be easier looking at it.

Nothing fancy.
drain the fuel tanks undo the tube between the mower & the fuel pump unplug the wires hiding around the starter undo the heavy starter wire.
check if the muffler will lift out with the engine, if not remove it
Pull the pulley off
undo the 4 engine bolts from underneath the mower then lift it out.

If the new engine has a fuel pump, install the engine compete with the pump.
Don't forget to remove the blower housing and clean the cooling fins.
