Howdy folks,

I’m an older fella trying to get my old John Deere JD400 back in working order. I’m swapping in a Briggs & Stratton 386447 engine (left side muffler) to replace the tired original. My main concern is how complicated the wiring will be for this swap—especially since the harness on these old machines can be a bit of a bird’s nest. Has anyone done this before and can share what to look out for with the wiring? Are there any conversion kits or diagrams that make it easier?

Any tips or advice from folks who’ve done this or worked on the JD400 wiring would be much appreciated!

You are going from a Kohler K series engine (50 years old) to a Briggs twin engine. Wiring won’t be your only concern. This will require modifications and would look hard at it before attempting.
