I would simply put a bypass/blanking plate on and change the oil more often. The older engines didn't even have a filter.

I agree with John
my Kubota, 26 yrs old, has no filter
no problems, I just change the oil regularly.
Can you post a good clear picture of the engine sitting on your frame so everyone can a really good idea of your problem? Lots of smart folks here that are willing to help out. Good luck with it.
