The other day we got a tree chopped down in our yard, and then yesterday they came to grind the stump. I don't have a lot of experience with tree trimming and the like so I thought they would come with a stump grinder like the Exmark Stump Grinder below. But NO! They came with a monster! The machine was huge! The second picture is of the machine they used: a Vermeer Stump Grinder...

After the stump was gone they just spread out all the "sawdust" along that part of the mulchbed. They said it will go away after awhile. Is this true or should I rake up all of the sawdust and dispose of it? Below is a picture of the sawdust....

I guess it depends on how quick you want it gone.

"IF" it is like the ones I have seen done you can rake it all out level and run over the stuff with a lawn mower when cutting the grass and in a pretty short time the place will be healed over and you won't be able to tell where the stump was at.

those grinders are monsters. they have carbide tipped blades and the wood is no match them. also with the sawdust, i believe it will decompose into a sod type soil. my buddies dad puts sawdust in his compost pile and then fertilizes his lawn with the compost. he cuts alot of wood so there must be a decent amount of saw dust in there. it works well for him so i figured i would pass it along to you.

The only one I have dealt with left a huge tall pile of chips, not dust. Crap was all over the general area. If I would have left it over the stump area the grass would have been dead in a 20 foot circle. The wind blows large chips all over the yard and then you hit them with your lawn mower. I raked it all up, dug up all the stuff from the hole where the stump had been and loaded it all on my truck. Most of it was very wet. Weighed my truck down alot. I hauled dirt back in the next spring and left it piled high so it would settle in over the summer and fall. Just now starting to look level again. They left alot of roots around the stump area, I dug under them and chopped them out. Hauled in more dirt.

Yeah there are probably still a lot of roots left under the ground. I found this picture online and really like it....it shows how a stump grinder probably won't get it all!
