I came accross a HS56 but it is missing the pull cord assembly. Before I buy the missing parts, I want to test if it runs so I am using a drill to crank to see if the ignition works. Compression feels good but that is for later.
I do not get any spark(or is it I just can't see it???) with the plug screwed in or not.
I confirmed the flywheel magnet is strong.

How fast does it need to spin before sparking. Do I need to use a pull cord assembly to get it up to speed to accurately tell me if the ignition works??

About 350 rpm.
Or just get the wife hold the plug while it is plug into the lead and see if her eyes light up. (just kidding)
Those NGK CMR6H are know for failing also check the spark arrester.
This probably goes without saying but because I have my share of 'old-man' moments, did you have the 'master control lever' pushed down off the STOP position(which is the ignition kill position) while performing your test(s)?

The faster the spin the bigger the spark.
Most battery drills just can not spin fast enough
