Stihl 028WB Backfire?

I've had the 028 for almost 30 years... always been THE SAW.
Last week was using it and it popped super loud. Then seemed to lose a little power and popped again.

Stopped using it for now... what was it?

pull the muffler off and see if the exhaust port is clogged up
You really have not given us much to go on.
Popped out the carb or the exhaust ?
Hard to start, easy start ?

The saw likely has points, which may be the problem area. If so, just pop on a coil off of and old 029/ms290, most shops will have some good used ones around, and cut the wire to the points.
