Lets start with the model number from under the seat so we can see who made your mower to give more directed advice.. Craftsman has been made by several companies.

Start at the steering wheel. Check for play between the steering wheel and shaft it bolts to. The wheel and shaft should turn at the same time. Then work you way down checking all connections where linkages meet until ya find the problem. Fyi, the first three digits of your craftsman model number reflect the manufacturer. Yours is 247 . If Craftsman still sell the 917 it's much more repairman friendly. 917 is American Yard Products.
