With out any engine details .... I'd try this to aim you in the right direction.
As soon as the engine shuts off again. Pull the spark plug and check for spark. Do you know how to do that?
Second, check the carb to see if there is any fuel in it. It's going to be one or the other.......

The engine is a Vanguard 18 hp V.T. Win On a 2000 Series mower. It's not that the engine spark plug will or will not fire. The engine will not turn over. Have a new charged battery. When it is hot and will not turn over and start. I can jump start it from the car battery. When I go to start it up at the next mowing, it will start (turn over). I don't dare turn off the engine in middle of mowing.

When it fails to turn over... Is it just silent when you go to 'start' position on the key switch... OR will it try to crank the engine But can not get past the first compression stroke...?

KennyVo, thanks for response. Yes, it is silent when you turn key to start position. But, when using jumper cables to car battery it starts up fine. Perhaps because of greater amperage from car battery does the trick. If I don't use the mower for several days and I go to use it, it starts right up. Could it be the solenoid or the coil?

Check the voltage at the battery, at the solenoid battery cable, at the small terminal on the solenoid... Check each of these WHILE holding the key switch to Start.
I am going to Assume you have already removed And cleaned Both Ends of Both Battery cables... If you have not done that do it because that is the #1 reason for intermittent starter... :smile:KennyV
