Starter not fully engaging flywheel

Yts4000 riding mower
Starter gear is metal, flywheel is plastic.

Starter gear is only contacting the mower 1/3-1/2 of the flywheel, and this has stripped that section of the flywheel teeth. Starter gear moves well but at its highest cannot reach the height of the flywheel. Correct starter. Thoughts?
 
Whoa if it has a Briggs you have a 14 or 15 tooth starter Bendix gear trying to mate with a ring gear designed for a 16 tooth Bendix gear.

Now the flywheel needs replacing and the correct Bendix used.
 
You going to need another flywheel no matter what , how did this happen ? did the starter get changed at some point and begin chewing up the flywheel , it would have made a sound like grinding or something , I've never run across this in the past
 
Looks like the starter had been replaced by the previous owner. When looking up the starter for that engine it came with a plastic or a metal gear. Ended up getting a new flywheel and starter to match.
 
You did not have to replace the fly wheel just the ring gear kit. New plastic ring gear kit and I think new drive gear. It has been a long time since I have seen one. Post the model type and code no of the engine.499612
