Starter gear not moving below the flywheel.

So, I still am fiddling with transplanting a B&S 287707 onto my old Snapper that had a pull start. My starter, the previous owner replaced the gear on it, but I've noticed with it sitting there the gear isnt returning to the 'down' position away from the flywheel. Is this a function that would happen with the battery connected (like solenoid operated) or is this some spring function that will happen without any power hooked up?

it should drop back down below the ring. if not the return spring may be broken or the drive gear on the stater may be defective. you may just want to get the drive replacement kit for it. it includes the complete drive gear parts most of the time. if it has the solenoid on the outside of the starter, you can check and see if the drive gear is hanging up or the solenoid is hanging up.

The bendix gear will drop down once the engine starts running. Have you made sure that you have the correct starter for the engine? B&S did use two different stater gears. You may have the wrong one which will not engage and disengage properly due to two different gears.

Here is a easy way to check it turn the engine by hand clockwise and the gear will drop down

Try spraying the gear with wd40. There may dirt or grease in there causing it to not fall back as free as it should.

I would not put any liquid lubricant on a starter gear. This type of lube will attract dirt and cause major problems down the road. Graphite lube is best, if you wish to you use any lubricant.

What about liquid graphite? I use that stuff on all my locks at lease every couple months

I would not use it on a starter system. Dirt here creates too many problems. 95% of the time I assemble them clean and DRY.

When you have sand on the gears it's just going to wear them out and bind thing up
