Starter does not engage

When I turn the ignition key on mt Craftsman LT1000 lawn tractor the starter turns but the star wheel does not engage with the fly wheel. All terminals have been cleaned and a new battery installed.

Remove the starter and inspect / replace the pinion gear.

Make sure that the battery is hooked up correctly.
