How do teeth on starter and flywheel look? You can change gear on starter easily if teeth are worn for a few dollars from B&S or Kohler small gas engine shop. Post your tractor model number from under seat, thanks.

Pigeon, Is the starter properly fitted and torqued down ? A loose starter will not engage properly. Also, I used to have an English car whose flywheel had a cocked (loose) starter gear-all kinds of trouble. The teeth would ride on top of one another. Is the starter the correct model for the engine? Try some bluing on the teeth (blue marker pen) and see how the teeth are engaging.

Firstly ensure it is the right starter.
They have different numbers of teeth & different shapes of teeth.
The only thing that makes the gear retract is the helix that the gear runs on.
In free air it will go up & down no troubles but with the pressure of the flywheel acting on it things are different.
We need makes and model numbers to be any further assistance.
