My 4235 mower won't shut off when the key is turned to the off position. Far the past week previous to this I had to try several times before the starter would engage (no sound when turning key to start position). I just bought 7 installed a ney key switch and that did not help at all. Also replaced the battery (4 yrs old) in case that might have been a problem.
Last year the mower shop replaced an electrical module when it was having starting issues. Is it common to have to keep replacing the module?

Absolutely not as far as module goes. Locate your serial number, then see operators manual troubleshooting section & service manual section 7. Check connection at fuel solenoid & all ground wires.

Thx Mark.
Checked connections after removing engine cover. My shop also said to check ground wire on coils, They all seem to be in good shape with clean tight connections.

The ground wire does exatly what it says ( obviously not named by a politician ).
So pull the connector and check.
With the engine turned off there should be continuity to ground.
With the engine turned on the wire should be open circuit.
IF not the switch or the ground wire to the switch is faulty.
Considering the history given prime suspect is the ground connection to the ignition switch.

OTOH if the results at the plug ase as expected then yo have a broken ground wire to one of your coils
