This was going to be the 1st time I mowed this year. I uncovered and fired up my mower, I was going to move it to a level place to give it a oil change. It started easily, however it smoked alot and seemed to blow oil out the exhaust! The smoke stopped within a few seconds, but it did not idle correctly So I turned it off and checked the oil level. It seemed too high and had a slight smell of gas. I decided it to just drain it where it was and refilled it with mobil one. Fired it up and it ran fine, no smoke for smell to the exhaust. Mowed the yard and rechecked the oil level. all seems fine. Just very concerned that it could have had enough gas in the oil to raise the level soo much. I guess I will just have to keep checking it.

Just keep an eye on it I would say its ok though if you changed the oil out. Does it have an oil filter?

If you want to add another step to starting & stopping your engine you can remove the possibility of this happening in the future.
Just add a Fuel Shut Off Valve in the fuel line. You can find many different shapes and sizes on eBay.
BTW great choice in oil... Mobil1, is hard to beat. :smile:KennyV

Yes it has a oil filter. it is a b&s 33m677-0123-g1 which is supposed to have full pressure lubrication. Kenny I thought the solenoid on the carb stopped this from happening ... at least while the engine is not running with the key off. I had planned to put one(fuelvalve) on it to make it easier to empty the carb when I was not going to use it for awhile. Turn the fuel off and let it run until it dies. By the way I am still more than pleased with my country clipper I bought used last year. My next task is to slide the deck out and check the blades to make sure they are ready for this new season.

True... But Nothing is quite as reliable as a manual valve... If you remember to use it.
I don't think you could have been running so rich that the oil was contaminated with fuel, seems you would have noticed that. So if the float didn't shut off the flow And the solenoid failed to completely close... you had a path to the crankcase while engine was shut down...

Using a manual shut off to run out of fuel might be somewhat helpful, though I don't think it will Completely empty the bowl, but may be better than carb setting full.
