Your right! The "plate" is a stick on type. Mine is readable, but it never ride again. It is Yard Art or
a parts machine if some one needs a part. I have never run the numbers on the tag to see the year made.

A stab in the dark...

Make sure the drive disc isn't contacting the chain case; I had one make a similar noise and the disc was mounted too low on the shaft. The proper distance from bottom of engine (where it sits on frame) to the drive disc surface is 3-7/8" to 4".

Perhaps the allen screws are loose and the disc is slipping down a bit. Good luck!
