Hello Snapper Users,
I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I own the above 21" Snapper walk behind self-propel mower. My engine stopped running last Saturday for no apparent reason that I could think of or see. The one thing I did notice is that it had little to no compression when I tried to restart the engine. I was looking at buying new rings, valves, tappets if needed, gasket set, and piston if needed. I priced everything and it came out to $120 for everything, or $85 with out the piston. Should I rebuild this engine or get a new replacement engine? I have seen a few on Ebay and on Small Engine Warehouse.com. I asked the Small Engine Warehouse seller on ebay if the Kohler XT800-3048 would fit my deck and I gave them all the information about my snapper. Small Engine Warehouse emailed me back through ebay and said that, that engine would not fit my mower and unfortunately they did not have an engine in stock that would fit. So I am trying to find a place that carries replacement engines that can help me. Do any of you know where I can go to get a replacement engine that will work on my mower? I like the prices that the small engine warehouse has on there small engines, but if they don't have a replacement then they don't do me any good. Thank you in advance for all your help.

JC, does the piston still move when u turn the flywheel? If it does, your cause may just be a warped\stretched valve and a new valve will cost u alot less.

My piston moves just fine up and down and the valves open and close fine too. How do I determine if it is a warped valve or stretched valve? Should I just order both valves and tappets and replace them and see what happens. The engine was a bit low on oil when it stopped running. The cylinder is not scared as far as I can see. The piston may be beat up but I will have to remove and inspect it. Than you for your reply and information. Greatly appreciate it.

Gus Gonzalez.

Is that a Quantum series Briggs engine? Look for the exhaust valve seat loose or a head gasket possibly. Post up more pictures with the head off please. Do a close up of the valves.

Hello Listers,
Well I rebuilt my 6.75 Briggs engine and it came out nice. New rings, valves, new head gasket new seals and gaskets all around. The piston looked good so I cleaned up and used it. Like Taryl says on Grass Roots Garage, I just freshened up the motor and got it going as cheap as possible.
The one thing I have noticed is that the mower does not move as fast as it used to. It still has the same two drive belts from 2006 when it was new. Should I replace both these belts and the drive wheel? I think I should just because they are so old The drive wheel I think maybe slipping causing the slow speed. When this mower was new I could run behind it. Today I had to cut some tall grass and a couple of times I had to help the mower out by pushing. Let me know what you all think.

I would replace the belts first. I'm sure 14 year old belts have seen better days.

Thank you for you thought. I was thinking the same thing. Replace the belt and if that doesn’t improve the drive speed then I’ll replace the drive wheel and disk.

Glad to hear you got it running or actually walking. Now that you are finished, I would of installed a new Briggs short block on her. Last one I did was around $125'ish range?? Wasn't much as I recall.
