Smoke from starter if key held over for too long

If I hold the key to the right too long, I get a little smoke, I believe from the starter. Does that make any sense?

Yes, something is getting hot enough to put off smoke.

Does anything else happen?
Like, the engine turns over?

pull your spark plugs and see if your engine will turn over.

It starts 70% of the time on first turn. If it’s hot, I need to play with the throttle to get it to start, so when that happens, I keep the key turned longer and get some smoke. It makes a weird noise, not like any other mower or engine I’ve had. Kind of a higher pitched noise.

You got a hole in the wire which is letting the smoke out.:laughing:
Let all of the smoke out and nothing will work. :confused2::confused2:

Starters draw a lot of amps and amps = heat particularly if they are being pushed through dirty contacts.
If you have to hold the starter on for longer than 30 seconds for your mower to start, you have problems with the engine that need to be addressed.

remove, clean and tighen all connects.
A poor connect causes a voltage drop...which causes more amps (current)...which causes heat...which can burn something up.

Your battery could be weak also.

Thanks for the tip. Contacts are pretty dirty. I’ll clean it up and see if I still have a problem.

Only need to hold it for a couple seconds before motor starts. I’ll try and post a video after I put it back together.

Does $130 for a starter sound legit?

Yes but $ 30 for a replacement brush set & lower bearing sounds a lot better.
