I think I must change the transmission oil...I think that the oil pressure is too great at the reservoirs, resulting in leaks...
Of course, the real reason is that the oil looks dirty...
20-50 motor oil ?
regular hydraulic oil ??
ATF ???
Simplicity is NOT helpful

Need to know which transmission you have. Peerless, hydroGear, Spicer, if you post more info like your units model numbers to help you.

Once you find out the brand / model / etc, the best thing to do is look online for a manual from the manufacturer. They will more likely give you the correct info. For my Toro MX5060, Toro says you can use their special oil at $11.00 a quart or 20w/50 motor oil. If you go the the hydro drive manual, they recommend conventional motor oil at $3.50 a quart.

Eaton, but I have not checked the data plate yet.
Simplicity states " Simplicity all-purpose hydraulic oil " .
ATF ??
Then, Ford or GM ATF ??

Depending on which series unit you have, Eaton recommends 10W-30, 10W-40, 20W-50 and even 80-90 gear lube. Going to need more info.

I finally checked in at the Simplicity "dealer" ( a good hardware store in Manchester).
The young counterman , using the computer, answered my query with "20-50 engine oil" , after I related Eaton 778.
He (the man behind the counter) did not think much of my ATF idea..."thats not even oil...ATF "...And ATF can be destructive in a transmission or engine not designed for this fluid..
So, its been a good day..Now I know what is meant by "all purpose oil" .
20-50, and I may substitute with 10-40.....or...
75 wt transmission oil, one very hard to find, recommended by Saab back in '69 and by our M88 , in one of their transmissions..
BITOG is most interesting, for those who "dig" oils.

Personally, I would stick with the recommended 20w/50 and leave it at that. I would hate to experiment and potentially cause damage. Just my $.02 and worth every penny...:laughing:

Most Eatons use 20-50 and I would stick with tha.

Thank you all, sorry, I misled with the hydraulic......
You know I have a hydraulic jack and cannot remember which oil this takes..
Probably something labeled "hydraulic jack oil"...
I hope never to move again !!!
I should make my own manual - just one page..
The overwhelming consensus is 20-50 oil ; I may sub with 10-40..

I just acquired a zt 1438, model 1693467, and would like to know how to change both trans fluids. Trans are Eaton 778.
Hopefully, it is as simple as removing a plug and draining?
What about purging air after refilling with 20w50?
Any advice/help is appreciated.
