Simplicity oil change

I was changing the oil and filter on my 38" simplicity with an 18hp Intek single cylinder. It had a brass fitting that attached to an aluminum block that screwed into the cast iron casing. Needless to say what kind of engineering process designed this. There was also a rubber o ring in the apparatus. I loosened the fitting to drain the oil but it would not seat when I tightened it up to refill the oil. All my new oil drained out making a big mess plus the waste & cost of the oil. Removed the complete drain system and replaced with a $5.00 drain plug with solved the problem. Also why did the place the oil filter in the side of the frame so that only a small filter would fit? I took my grinder and cut the frame so a standard filter would screw in. I thought Simplicity was better engineered.
