I have broken 3 shovels this week and I am starting to think I might look silly with how many shovels I buy at the hardware store. Are shovels not made well anymore or am I just using the wrong shovel.

Get a Fiberglass handle on your shovels.... They wont brake.

What kind of shovel are you using and breaking? I've only busted one before and it's because I didn't get it out of the concrete in time and it snapped the handle off when I was prying it out. What a mess it was!

You can NEVER have too many tools !!!! I have Craftsman brand wood handle shovels (round and square point) that are as old as '89, and several fiberglas handle models. BUY AT SEARS. If you ever break a Craftsman yard tool they replace it no questions asked. I had this cheapo wood handle posthole digger I got there 17 years ago for $8, if finally broke and they do not carry the wood handle PHD now, I ended up with a $40 fiberglass handle PHD as a replacement. Same full warranty.

Sounds like you may have a wooden handle and very hard soil? Kenny has a good point with the fiberglass handle. That's why they make them, so the tougher jobs.
