SEARS SUPER 12

I'm new here and would like to know if anyone owns a SS 12. The man that sold it to me told me it was a 16 HP but I wondered why it was called a SS 12. The model number is 91725311. I don't know the year either and hoping someone could tell me. have a good one.

I have an SS-12 also. It is 12 hp I believe and has a Tecumseh Hh120. Mine is a 1967 model. I have a mowing deck (48 inch I believe), a snow plow, and a ground breaking plow with a three point hitch. I haven't used it in a few years because I have had problems with keeping it running after it heats up.

Thanks for the reply Bruce. I found a manual for it on eBay which will come in handy. It runs fine but I have to hot wire it to start it so going to just put a toggle switch and a starter button in. I have to drive 15 miles one way to get to a auto parts store ot hardware store so waiting for an excuse to burn up the gas to go get the parts. From what I've read these are good tractors. Would you know where I can find new headlights for it? I was wondering if the snow blade would push dirt? probably not. Thank God I don't have to plow snow. I was born in Iowa. I will keep looking for attachments and probably find them when I don't have the money... Thanks again for the reply.

Bruce is correct it is a 12HP Tecumseh
I bought one brand new in 1967 ran it until 1986 and sold it for $100.00 more than what I paid for it and bought a new John Deere 180 and still have it today.

That ole SS12 was a well built tractor nothing like the tinny things Sears sell today

Thanks for the reply and with good news. I don't have much new stuff, sold my 61 Dodge pickup with a slant six in it and regreat it now, but I have a 1984 Chevy C 10 half ton that I'm keeping. I like this tractor because it is 43 years old and still running and working. I look at the new Sears tractors when I'm there and glad I got this one. It has a lot of power, I used it to move a lot of dirt already and need to move a lot of landscape rocks to find a water leak (sprinkler pipe). I want to get the lights working, the amp gauage and the cigarette lighter working, and weld a handle to the hitch because I have a bad shoulder and have to reach back to far to lift the blade. I'm in a lot of sand up here and may try chains just to see if they help from getting stuck a lot. This thing is fun to drive and grade with.

The only thing I found that works in loose dry sand, is a bigger foot print... Wider tires OR duals ... chains will just dig faster... :smile:KennyV

Thanks Kenny. I was thinking that dune buggies have big tires and smoothe tires I don't need anything that will dig faster...........

The mag was weak on mine it was not good at starting when new I converted to a automotive coil got it off a Buick from a salvage yard for free and used the points already on it and it started right up every time.

I used mine to do the landscaping when I built a new home.
A friend of mine had a horse drawn 7 foot double gang disk and I borrowed it to work the ground I put 400 lbs of wheel weights and tire chains and when the guy that owned the disk came down to see me pull it he went home and got his camera.

He said he was sure I would never pull it, He would have been right if I didn't add the 400 lb weights
Transmission got so hot it would burn you if you touched it but I saved $3500.00 and ran it for another 17 years after that before selling it so I guess it did not hurt it much.
Don't try this with a new Sears Tractor Bad things will happen.:laughing:

That is great and darn good that you had it another 17 years. Saving $3,500 didn't hurt either ha, ha.
My nieces husband likes mine so much he is looking for one now. I lucked out finding one close enough to pick up, but he may have a hard time. I probably won't live another 17 years but I hope I get a lot of good use out of it and when I'm six feet under I hope it goes to someone who can really use it.

Sorry, but I am not sure where you can find a headlight. I never had much luck pushing dirt with it. It was pretty good with snow once I put the wheel weights and chains on it. It is 12 hp, but will easily outpull my newer 25hp Craftsman. And it probably is double in weight also. The mower deck on the Sears is much thicker than the frame on the newer Craftsman.
