sealant vs gasket

Working on my Kohler courage 18hp and I was wondering what the difference would be using a sealant rather than a gasket on the top cover.

If you are referring to the closure plate then it a world of difference as the gasket provide more clearance than RTV. IF use RTV then the spec clearance that moving parts need will become ZERO causing parts to bind.

Thank you Star Tech for your reply, that is what I thought and that is why I did not use RTV but I thought I would ask before moving ahead. Maybe you have a answer to my other post about the ACR that I posted earlier titled Kohler courage 18hp.

Wrong engine, but what about a kawasaki 730v valve cover? Same issue?
