Scotts (John Deere) 17hp lawn tractor owner new to forum

Hello everyone! My name is Combatphotog (because I made 2 trips to Iraq in 2007 and 2008 as a combat photographer/journalist.)
I am new to this forum, and joined to discover how to troubleshoot our Scotts (John Deere) 17hp riding mower built around 12 years ago.

It will start, but not run. I am looking forward to learning how to repair it through research of the forum, and with the advice of the forum members.

You'll have to give more info. Like how long does it run? does it sputter and die? Does it start right up or do you have to hold the starter down for several seconds? Hope we can help. And welcome. (I'm somewhat new too.)
