I have a Scotts 2550 25HP Kohler engine. My wife was using it and the engine stopped. That's about the best description I can get. After some investigation I suspect an engine problem.
I'm wondering if I should be able to turn the engine by hand using the nut/bolt on the top that id in the center of the fan? If so, how much effort should it take?
I've eliminated the starter and battery and removed spark plugs.
Thanks,
Dennis

Sure does't sound good, did you run it out of oil?
No. Oil is fine but I did consider the oil pump might have failed. I had that happen in a 63 chevy once. No metal in the oil I removed.

Try using a wrench or socket to turn the engine over. The valves could be sticking or the gap on the lifter is too wide. This creates too much compression and the starter isn't strong enough to turn the flywheel. If the motor turns over check the valve lifter clearance it should be about .025 to .030
No, it isn't compression. I took out the plugs and still can't get it to turn over. I've removed the flywheel and stator. The shaft is completely dry around the seal. I'd expect some oil. I'm suspecting an oil pump failure.

make sure the drive belt is plenty loose...if the engine is frozen your kinda screwed:frown:.....drain the oil and inspect it with white paper towel
Yeah, all belts are off. Clutch is off. I didn't see any metal in the oil I drained but it could have settled in the pan. I'll clear my bench, pull the engine and move it inside in the next couple of days.
Any idea where I can get a rebuild kit? I've tried google but there is so much trash in google searches these days I can't find the good stuff.
Look at the clutch itself. Clean it off and inspect for numbers look closely. Chances are it's a John Deere part because Deere makes the scotts tractors.
Yeah, I saw that one but was afraid it was one of the weaker ones made for smaller decks. I saw some posts where people only got 50 hours on some clutches.
That is the part number listed for the other serial numbers. JD doesn't list a part number for my range.
