Scotts 2048 ( 1999) Kohler Commander vertical engine, odd problem

Hi,
We just picked it up today and fixed it up today, new battery, plugs and oil with filter..
The Battery light stays on the entire ride... Is that normal?
Also when you go into reverse and the deck is engaged it back fires and cuts out/ Shuts down..

Any ideas?

Shutting down when going into reverse is normal, due to the reverse safety system incorporated into all new mowers. You may or may not have a bypass system for reverse.

You will need to take a meter and find out for sure if it is charging the battery or not. Normal charge should be 13.5-14 volts. If lower than 13 it would mean that it is not charging and will need to start diagnosing the charging system. If the charge is in the normal range, than most likely something to do with the indicator light circuit.
