I was mowing and my mower stalled a few times, I had no issue restarting until this one time in which it wouldn't even click. I found video online talking about the mower blade switch so I took that apart and it was filthy. After cleaning that the mower started trying to start again but it is making an awful sound and won't start.

Battery says 12 volts.

Any idea what else I can try?

Sounds like the starter trying to engage
Remove the finger guar and see if you can rotate the engine 2 full turns by hand pressing down on the screen with your palm .

Just because it says 12 volts doesn't mean it has 12 volts under starting load.. Sounds like there is a weak or bad connection and is loosing juice under load. May want to have battery checked to make sure it is good, and also check the battery connections both at the starter solenoid, and the battery as well as the ground clamp on the frame.and - battery post.

Turned out to be the battery, when I took it to get tested they said it was at 3%. New battery got it running right back.

Need make the charging is working too.
