We have a Ryobi bush trimmer that we purchased last year, we used it most of the summer and it stopped, my husband has no clue what is wrong with it, has anyone had anything similar happen to them?
My husband says it runs, just not well. The engine will go but the shaft will not turn, so it is useless as grass/bush trimmer. It makes me angry especially since the thing cost over $400 at Home Depot.
so when he starts it up does it idle fine and run fine all the way to wide open throttle?
or does it idle good. and miss fires right off idle?
if it has a missfire above idle the cam is probable bad the exhaust cam lobe is wiped out.. no opening closing the valve.
if its not engine problem
could be the clutch bell screw backing out or the clutch bell shaft cable stripped out, trimmer gear box at the end of the shaft at the trimmer head.

"Engine will go, but shaft the shaft will not turn". Might want to check the shaft. Maybe it snapped.
We are going to need a lot more information if we are going to be able to help you.
Start with the model number of the trimmer.
Strait shaft or bent shaft ?
what type of cutting head were you using, string, plastic hammers, solid blade ?
love the sound of the little ryobi 4 stroke thumper and the over head cam belt drive is pretty cool too...smallest ohc belt drive i have seen yet...the tolerances for the pistons and rings are way to tight in my opinion...but lack of changing oil in them is really bad...don't think i come across one with an oil change yet.. LMBO! have 5 or 6 of these trimmers..had one that was so bad you couldn't pull it over because of the contaminated oil was so bad.. i removed the spark plug and the oil pan bare block and washed it out in the parts washer rotating the assemble to get the gunk out from between the piston skirt and the cylinder spraying it all out with starting fluid. let dry for an hour.. put some 30w oil in it after getting it back together fired right up and runs great..changed the oil after 10 minutes of running ready to run it this summer..man i like to tinker. lol
