Now your title says it runs for one second. So it dose run. So this means you are getting everything for it to run but for a short time. This to me would point at the fuel part of it.

Fresh fuel and filter is a must, then blow through the carb fuel line in both directions with compressed air.

It sounds like it is just starting on vapors.

The valve may have stuck open, allowing the clearance to be excessive.
How many hours and years on this motor?

It did start and then it just spun free and the intake push rod was loose now I have to start from there any clues to what would cause that, doesn't seem to be a valve adjustment screw or no way to adjust ?

The valve may have stuck open.
It may have stuck in the guide or the valve spring may be broken.
The cam lobe or lifter/follower may be worn.
Intake or exhaust valve?

About how many hours on this motor?

First thing to do is put up the engine's brand/model/spec numbers first, then go into more detail about the pushrod thing.

As I recall that mower has a Briggs in it. I have ran across the same problem on that model mower. The repair job that I has the push rod came off the rocker arm. I installed a new push rod. The problem I found that caused the push rod to come off the rocker the cylinder filled with gas from a bad needle valve in the carburetor. This was a few years back and at that time they didn't sell repair parts for that carburetor so I has to buy a new carburetor. It sounds to me like you may have a bad needle valve in your carb. so if I was you I would see if you can find a repair kit for your carburetor and give it a good cleaning.

reynoldston do you know how to get the needle out? also what looks like a fuel shut off screws into bottom of float bowl, w/black ground an a white wire mower is model 1642h 16 hydro 10 to 12 yrs old. have done valves an such, gets gas to float bowl, cranks, won't hit.

I think that Briggs has a non adjustable float in it. The carburetor is made in Mexico and is not repairable. Like I said earlier I couldn't find parts for the one I repaired and had to replace the carburetor. Maybe with your model number someone will come up with something different then what I just told you?? I have found the time and money you spend on trying to repair some of these foreign carburetors you are better off replacing it.

What you will need is the engine model number. B&S puts this number on the fan shroud. ( BUT ) You will have your best luck finding parts for this mower right from a John Deere dealer with the tractor model number not the engine number. John Deere has there own part numbers.

Here are some of the numbers I can see, 38Q777 and in the back I found what may be the tractor # HYDRO 052998A hope this helps.. the mower is old and numbers are had to see.. carb. acts like insteaded of drawing air in it like pushing it out throught carb. and I did a value job on it.. thanks for all the help

Basic engine condition is always very important.
Does it have good compression?
Is the oil control sufficient or did it foul or wet the spark plug?
Any other useful history on the motor?

We were given the mower to us from my brother who moved to Fl. he said he use to have to choke a lot to get it started...But engine seems to be ok,it has good compression, oil is good, clean fuel ,clean the lines, clean the carburetor, spark plug gets fire,we have went through all we are thinking fuel shut off switch or some other on the body as far as history on the mower have no clue all help appreciated thanks so much
