Hi again,

When shifting from forward to reverse, my MTD 12.5, 38" has quite a jerk to it. How can I smooth it out? I didn't mind so much before, but having had 13 spinal procedures, I need to be more delicate. I've not really done any transmission maintenance to it, but if you can steer me in the right direction, I'll try anything.

Two things can cause your problem. Worn belt or worn idler pulley. If your belt has not been changed in the last 5 years I would start there.

Thanks, I'll look into that. Is there anything to be done with the transaxle itself, such as draining and refilling with oil, grease, what have you?

Should I grease the idler pulley or anything else while I've got the cover off?

Take the idler pulley off when you change the belt. Spin it between your fingers, if you feel ANY grinding, replace it. Leaving it on will shorten the life of your new belt. If you are sure that it is in good shape, you can put a drop or two of oil on the bearing.
