I recently purchased a Cat mower lift that lifts my JD D155 from the side at a 45 degree angle. After lowering it back to the ground after cleaning under the deck, the engine was difficult to start and smoked alot. I am wondering if I allowed oil to enter one of the cylinders. Any thoughts? Any way to prevent this problem?

Probably no way to prevent it. it's best to lift engines with the spark plugs going up.
Or you can take your spark plugs out every time and crank the engine to expel the oil and reinstall the plugs. but that's a bit of a time consuming task.

Yes
Always lift from the cylinder side
So tractors lift from the front
ZTR's ( mostly ) lift from the rear
Push mowers blocks under the rear wheels ( I use milk crates ) then tilt the handlebars backwards

Easiest thing for tractor style mowers is an engine crane , slung from the front wheels .

If you have lifted from the side, always lift from the carb side
Remove the spark plugs, spin the engine with the starter without the plugs in then replace the plugs.
Expect a bit of smoke on inital start up.
Fitting a tap in the fuel line to turn off the fuel helps prevent fuel draining from the tank through the carb & into the engine.
